A Cinematic Exhibition Space into Fort Lane
Cinema is the introduction to various art forms, cultures, imagination and storytelling. The combination of silence, light, emotion, colour and moving image builds an atmosphere that connects people through a shared experience allowing one to slowly slip away into a new reality. Fort Lane was once the home and embodiment of this cinematic spirit of love, sadness, action and stillness. It was the place for all early settlers of Auckland to be. As history progressed, Fort Lane slowly stopped being a destination of creativity, entertainment and distraction. It became a transitional space that paved a pathway from one place to another. Through the use of light projection, materiality and form, I hope to restore a sense of imagination and wonder to the community.
‘The Reel’ is a permanent and immersive exhibition extension of the Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki, located near the intersection of Fort Lane and Customs Street East. This cinematic space houses moving images in a dynamic free-flowing cinematic atmosphere for all of the community to enjoy. You are welcome to sit, stand and wander through a display of light projected art across the ceiling, floor and exterior walls of the nearby buildings. Visitors to the lane can easily walk under and around the ribbon-like structure, becoming saturated in dappled light as projections of moving art seep through the reels flooring surface. These large-scaled projections will melt away the surrounding city frame, allowing you to dissolve and transport into an entirely new world. ‘The Reel’ is a space built to connect people through intimacy, silence and colour.
