_robot, Robot! is a short film featuring sitcom-style dialogue, and made in Unreal Engine 5. It conveys the theme of “realities” within cinematic realism. It is my exploration of utilising photorealistic graphics as a tool and an element of cinematic narration. Experimenting with the possibilities, I posed the research question: “through the different phases of the creative process, how can I adapt realism to my work and in what ways can photorealistic visual effects contribute to the storytelling?”

Computer-generated imagery (CGI) evolves rapidly. The digital industry develops advanced standards as new hardware and production tools arise. New possibilities also become apparent when it comes to creating new content. With the understanding of realism in cinematic works and the essential techniques to craft a perceptually realistic world, photo-real graphics can integrate with other film elements.

This project investigates the nature of the connection between photorealistic graphics and the concept of reality in creative works. It encourages me to focus more on the interactive aspect of the work, accepting new platforms and media and applying contextual bits of knowledge by using resources and materials across multiple fields and thinking out of the box, not only generating content but also bringing connections.
