Innocent Rebellion

My project is based on the idea of turning what we know to be “rebellion” into something we can portray in a positive manner. My idea stems from exploring how Disney characters that are known for their innocence for children’s entertainment, can be morphed into the many kinds of culture, style, aesthetic and societal categories that we as individuals get placed in. To explore this process, I used three different mediums i.e oil paint, watercolour, and acrylic all on one canvas. I used bright colours in a scenic form of a landscape then covered in layers of white acrylic paint. This made the coloured mediums underneath the blanket of acrylic white, erupt in an oozy, bubbly, crackly texture. From the first time experiencing this reaction, I indulged in the process and made a series of works.

I feel that I enter a new domain when my mindset is on a painting. I view my work as a character that I am creating to exist. I wanted to portray rebellion in an innocent and interesting way by mixing three different mediums, oil paint, acrylic, and watercolour. I have a mutual understanding of the idea of rebellion, for me, it can go both negatively and positively. I feel you can shape judgment in your own way. I understand the art world in the way you can create anything you want and portray it without any limits. Though, as for the real world that we live in and cope with each day, it is tiring and complicated. Finding an escape in artmaking, which allows me to move my mindset out of all the unnecessary chaos, is like therapy. I can make my own sense of stability, love, care, and belonging. Being in a space where I can test the limits with mediums that are not originally meant to be used together excites me. I view oil paint, watercolour, and acrylic as individual personalities, once put in the same space on a canvas, they reject each other by cracking, oozing, and bubbling.
