Why design the Smart Mirror system for shoppers?

As pandemics and technology continue to grow, there is an increasing demand for online consumption. With the increase in online shopping, the return rate is also rising dramatically, especially in the clothing industry. Almost everyone who buys clothes online will encounter a situation where they purchase the wrong size or it does not match the picture. Most of these ill-fitting clothes will be returned and exchanged. This invariably adds to problems such as wasted transport resources. Perhaps some of the clothes will be discarded by the customer, adding to the environmental pollution. So my project discusses how we might give shoppers convenience and confidence when buying clothes online. I designed a system of smart mirrors that would allow users to easily buy clothes that fit them through the concept of AR clothing.

The discrepancy between the actual item and the promotional image is a pain point in online shopping. A large number of lousy return experiences are the main reason why consumers do not trust online shopping. This Smart Mirror project examines how my vision is to make it confident and convenient for shoppers to buy clothes online—focusing on solving the dilemmas encountered when purchasing clothes online.

To solve this problem, I learned the target audience of the project and a description and preconception of their background. i.e. the situations they may encounter. About developing an empathetic solution using the methodology. Action research and human-centred design helped and determined the formation of the project. Ethical approval was the basis for my design and analysis.

My main focus is on the process of trying on clothes, the convenience of a smart mirror remotely controlled by my phone and the filtering function when shopping. The AR virtual imaging lets shoppers know what outfit is right for them. Connecting the phone to the mirror via Bluetooth allows the consumer to wear various types of clothing. The filtering function will let shoppers find their favourite clothes while browsing casually.
