I Summon Up Remembrance Of Things Past

Bachelor of Design Architectural Design Exhbition and Event Design Experience Design Interior Design Moving Image Community Narrative Performance

Inspired by the destruction of Point Britomart, In Remembrance of Things Past is an ode to the history of the Auckland Domain. Deteriorating surfaces and textures wrapped around the city's structures hold stories we are blind to. By exposing these stories and learning about our past through the act of making, we as a community reach a mutual understanding of what has come before us.

This design proposal repurposes the Commerce Street car park building, transforming it into a cinematic gallery with in-house studio space. The use of cinematic documentation was and still is a large part of the evidential narrative. Using archival cinematic media, professional creatives and members of the public are encouraged to learn about past narratives–personal or historical–through the construction of static and moving images- which are projected onto either of the two gallery spaces.

These galleries are also intended to host public and private functions, with a permanent rooftop bar and catering kitchen. Classes and orientation events will be available for those who prefer more structure to their creative process.

As the world we have become familiar with crumbles away, the act of making carries on.
