Kenka is a collaboration between myself and Jingxi Yang, with the soundtrack created by Ezra Mckay. Kenka is a mixed-media short film combining the aesthetics and technical styles of artists such as Akira Toriyama, Yi-Mou Zhang and George Morikawa.

My research question for this project was, “How can I create a 3D animated short film which explores mixed media approaches to aesthetics, animation and cinematography?” This led to the Manga aesthetic of the animation, mixed with the anime animation style and the martial arts from wuxia films.

The leading research for the film came from trying to incorporate all my influences into a concise, interesting short film. The visual style was created with Blender shaders, while all the 2D animation techniques were added afterwards, drawn on by hand. A lot of simulation and compositing also went into the film.
