2D Animation

A 2D animated short film that follows Anna, a shy costume designer working in the 1950s/60s film industry alongside the beautiful actress Diane. Both women struggle to conform to society’s strict ideals of femininity, Anna never gaining recognition through her hard work and talent. In contrast, Diane can never get a break from the constant eyes of the male gaze. Our animated portion shows how Anna doesn't fit into the lavish party while Diane is surrounded and adored by the other guests including the director. Outside in the garden, away from the eyes of society, both share a tender moment and express their admiration for each other.

The capstone I and Jannisa have been working on is a 2D animated short film that follows Anna the shy costume designer in the 1950s/60s film industry alongside the beautiful actress Diane. Both women struggle to conform to society’s strict ideals of femininity, Anna never gaining recognition through her hard work and talent. In contrast, Diane can never get a break from the constant eyes of the male gaze. For my research question, I explore a formalist approach to using colour, composition and lighting to convey the impact of the male gaze on women. We only had time to animate the party portion of the film, so we felt that these scenes showed a pivotal moment between both characters. And also that this portion had more variety and elaborate set designs to assist with my research question. I wanted to explore a more story-driven animation that showcased in-depth relationships and themes that focused on the visual narrative and aesthetics when showcasing characters' intentions and relevance in scenes.
