The Age of Isolation

Bachelor of Design Photography Publication Collaborative Health and wellbeing Identity Narrative Storytelling

This project is a photographic inquiry of the generation developing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Participation from models was a vital and pivotal aspect of this project. I used the concept of whanaungatanga to build photographs through trust. This ensured that as well as being proud of the photographs produced, we also generated portraits that represent them personally, advancing the project.

In 2020, COVID-19 took the world by storm, forcing New Zealand and the rest of the world into isolation. It is acknowledged that the psychological impacts of COVID-19 are rampant and growing, however, it is difficult to truly comprehend the ongoing impacts, as the pandemic continues to evolve. As a result, endeavouring to gain insight where possible is both valuable and crucial.

‘The Age of Isolation’ is a publication designed to question how photography and interviewing can combine to create a visual database reflecting the COVID-19 pandemic. It investigates the experiences of six undergraduate participants, and explores how photographic recording and narrative interviewing create an engaging, analytical refection of the generation who have experienced university through the pandemic.
