Creating a Capsule Collection

The Everyday Woman defines minimalism in a way that creates a feeling of effortlessness and clothing that speaks for itself. I believe that you should wear “clothes that make you feel beautiful but different and modern”, as said by Martin Margiela.

My graduate collection, The Everyday Woman, showcases my continuous inspirations through the design and construction of my final garments. My focus is on designing for the everyday woman by creating a capsule collection that consists of elevated, timeless essentials and aims to minimize the amount of clothing wastage.

Initially becoming inspired by Belgian fashion designer, Martin Margiela, he encouraged certain design aesthetics and processes that influenced my final collection. My design aesthetics and processes include creating doll size toiles, collaging images with design sketches, and incorporating natural beauty.

I reference the period of the late ‘90s and early 2000’s to encapsulate the feeling of effortlessness, particularly shown through portraits taken of Kate Moss, Margiela’s “Seven Women” short film, and the designer, Calvin Klein. I chose this period because a sense of minimalism is shown through the clothing, many designers stripped back with their designs and focused on timelessness, which I feel passionate about.
