Handmade Footwear Design

A personal exploration into the history of footwear in Aotearoa both Pākehā and Maori.

My collection is a personal exploration of the history of footwear in Aotearoa, both Pākehā and Maori - rediscovering my own Whakapapa and Hū and reflecting on details such as Hobnails and Crampons used for versatile climates in Aotearoa. Sharing a similar utilitarian function-inspired aesthetic, Dirk Bikkembergs' early high-end shoe designs heavily impacted my own design process - only natural repairable materials were used in personalised traditional silhouettes.

By further understanding and exploring the history of both pākehā and Maori footwear I have been able to deepen my awareness of design and fashion, this, in turn, has served to ground me in who I am as a designer and as a person, thereby providing me with the foundation for many collections to come.
