Encouraging sustainable practices in the floristry industry.

The Impermanence of Flowers is a concertina that brings awareness to sustainability in the floristry industry. It is a duality that shows a visual representation of decaying flowers and how this work can inspire sustainable practices.

The Impermanence of Flowers is a concertina that's objective is to bring awareness to sustainability in the floristry industry. It is a duality that shows a visual representation of decaying flowers and informative content that inspires sustainable practices and solutions through concepts of romanticism and decay.

The motivation behind this project is the industry’s problem with plastic pollution and excessive waste as it is an ongoing issue that needs to be addressed. Consumers and those who work in the industry hold the responsibility to make sustainable choices when purchasing and arranging cut blooms. Exploring how current floristry mechanics can be replaced with creative and sustainable solutions that reduce their environmental impact.

This project was developed through the handmade methods of paper making, floral arranging, collaging and forming applications. Photography is used to capture the time lapse of the flower arrangement decaying with themes of beauty and romanticism in death. The results bring together a visual and organic output that explores the decay of flowers and how their life cycle symbolises the floristry industry’s unsustainable practices. This Impermanence of Flowers will contribute to bringing forward awareness of sustainability in the floristry industry. It has sourced solutions and alternative methods that help to reduce the impact on the environment.
