Neurodiversity and Memory

This project delves into memory and the lesser known parts of an invisable disability.

The Parts of Us, combines sculpture, photography, and semiotics, to craft a collection of interactive works in the form of fabric prints. The delicacy and dreaminess of the works is activated by the viewers as they move around the work. The lightness of the fabric responds to each person as they move- the same way a person responds to different people because of their memories and experiences with them. This installation is a visual representation of memory, from the lens of someone who is neurodivergent, or more specifically, memory from an ADHD experience. These works show the deeply personal and unseen or unrepresented side of certain parts of neurodiversity. The Parts of Us shows the overthinking, the extremes of emotions, and the sensory overload. Across several fabric print drops, like falling pages, these works show a progression of a person overcoming the fear of how others perceive them. These works represent years of growing personal confidence and learning that neurodiversity is a valid way of thinking. This collection combines an honest form of freewriting poetry with photographs of memories associated with the writing. The Parts of Us overlays these two mediums to create an interactive work where the viewer can find themselves moving through the intricate fabric of time. The vulnerability, delicacy, and honesty it breathes are foregrounded in the installation of this work. The Parts of Us represents the misunderstood and silenced aspects of ADHD and shows this through a lens without a filter of shame or guilt.
