Interactive and Experimental Space Where Illusion and Distortion Alter a Person's Mind and Spatial Awareness

Between Queen Street and Fort Lane, in the heart of Downtown Auckland’s commercial district, is the quiet and foreboding Imperial Lane. ‘Through Reflection & Interaction Brings Performance’ is a space where exists a large glass box as an installation artwork. The glass box has multiple rotating doors, with one side as glass and the other as dichroic film. These doors pivot throughout the day, even when there are performers. As you are seated facing the box, the door pivots, and you will see yourself within the performers- making the audience part of the performance.

Through my experimentation with surface textures, site sequences and movie inspiration, I have created this space in Imperial Lane for performers and viewers to be a part of one world. I am bringing together and expanding two distinct universes. In addition, an interactive aspect of deception and distortion is introduced, altering what you see within the space.

The Box Is A Space For Performers, and A Performer Itself

Surfaces and materials have a language of their own. The utilisation of light, shadow, and reflection is a recurring theme in the space’s design. The warped reflected mirror’s materiality across the room distorts your perception of where you are and your own spatial awareness within it. Applying rough sanded-down portions of the mirror will also reflect the building’s past and the original materials that were employed in the room.
