Clay and Connection

An Ode to Pottery

My practice is rooted in creating ceramic vessels thrown on a pottery wheel. These vessels hold the evidence of their creation through imperfections, ridges and marks from their maker and process. They are intimate moments of memory solidified in glass and stone. I see a memory of a  person or experience as a non-physical notion, and these vessels allow me to transform these non-tangible things into palpable objects. The clay in itself has memory; it is always fighting to take the path of least resistance. It holds its constraints as a material. By creating these artefacts in this way, I can generate and collect these memories in an archival manner, allowing them to exist beyond myself. My work creates the object in the image of the memory. I am the activator and work to honour the material and embrace the elements of alchemy that come with working in clay.
