An exploration of 3D animation on communicating the benefits of outdoor play
A Frame Through Nature is a 3D short, animated film that was created in response to the declining rate of outdoor play in New Zealand. Specifically free, child-led and unstructured play is crucial for childhood development.
Outdoor play embodies a sense of freedom - a time away from a child's daily structured activities to learn the trials and errors they initiate and control. The self-directed nature of free play can build a child's sense of autonomy, competence, and confidence, which are crucial attributes as children grow older.
This exploration centred around employing my animation experience to foster tangible changes in attitudes regarding the importance of outdoor play for children’s health and well-being. Animation allows the creator to visualise imaginative or impossible endeavours. This makes for more creative options in storytelling. Consequently, this led me to investigate how animation as a medium can effectively reach parents and children.
