Where tactile, experiential learning encourages cultural understanding

Growing up in New Zealand, I am lucky to have been socialised around the richness of Filipino culture. However, as with any culture, there are covert aspects that I have limited knowledge on, such as traditional storytelling. Inspired by my dad’s childhood memories of sharing folktales with friends and family, I wanted to recreate a feeling of togetherness and warmth that is central to Filipinos. Through the eyes of the character, Ada, I aim to also convey that your connection to culture is something that you can nurture. Considering the context of the Filipino Diaspora and increasing globalisation, representation and intercultural competence are emphasised. In making an effort to learn about each other’s backgrounds, we build curiosity, community and appreciation. As a Filipino designer, this project is my way of broadening the array of Filipino media out there, keeping mythologies alive while filling in the gaps in my own knowledge.
