Improving food allergy education through play.

Allergy Explorers is a board game designed to educate children about food allergies. My project explored how game-based learning could transform a serious and often intimidating topic into something approachable, engaging and enjoyable for young audiences. In New Zealand, limited food allergy education in schools has led to low awareness and inadequate support for children living with allergies. As a result, many experience bullying, isolation and embarrassment over a condition beyond their control. Having faced these challenges firsthand, I aimed to design a resource that encouraged understanding and open conversations about food allergies.

Through illustrative design and interactive gameplay, Allergy Explorers helps children recognise common food allergens and learn how to manage them safely. The game empowers children with allergies to better understand their bodies and advocate for themselves, while also educating their peers, promoting empathy and improving food allergy safety.
