Captured Gestures

Bachelor of Visual Arts Mixed Media Painting Sculpture Craft Play Surface Manipulation

Through gestural abstract expressionist mark making, my experience of the world as a neurodivergent, queer person becomes a tangible object. By marrying my art making practice with my bookbinding passion, I create a spatial intervention that encourages the audience to step into my shoes and my work in a more literal sense. Using the basic idea of pop-up book mechanics and the natural gravity of paper, I engage an audience at a more familiar level and invite a more relaxed type of interaction and participation. Captured Gestures takes up space, and when a viewer stands within my work I want their smallness to disintegrate into my installation, feeling at once small and powerful. The book unfolds for all to see, extending what a book can be.
