Choose
Participation & Agency In High-Fatigue Systems
Choose is a low-effort self-care system for junior long-haul flight attendants. It responds to a problem I first noticed through my own experience of jet lag: what happens when exhaustion is part of someone’s job? Most junior crew are aged 21 to 25 and start flying straight after university. They care about their health, but after a 14-hour duty, fatigue makes simple decisions feel impossible, such as what to eat, which vitamin to take, or when to set alarms. Research shows long-haul crew average only 4.9 hours of sleep per duty day (Wen et al., 2020). I see this as a failure of system support, not personal discipline. Choose uses roster data to plan rest and meals, then shows one task at a time across phone, lock screen and Apple Watch. It is self-care that decides for you, when you can’t.
