The Rise of the Internet and its Impacts on Girlhood

How can publication design analyse the rise of the internet and the many impacts it is having on our younger generation of girls while exploring themes of girlhood?

This project explores how publication design can bring awareness to the internet’s and social media’s impacts on young girls and their girlhood. The publication uses collage to portray themes of being chronically online and the negative sides of the internet. It draws a comparative analysis between the childhood experiences of the 2020s and those of the 2000s, highlighting how the rise of the internet has impacted young girls’ lives over time. The methodology consisted of internet research, sketching, storyboarding, and collage. The collages are created with a combination of childhood photos, hand-drawn elements and magazine cutouts, which have been used to create a 50s/60s visual style, representing a time before the Internet. The publication works to inform the audience of the negative impacts that the Internet has on a young girl’s childhood, which forces them to grow up quickly. It has been created with the goal of a change of perspective, a desire for change and reflection from the audience. Specifically, It can make those who were born in the early 2000s (being the most active generation on social media) reflect and question the content that they are posting for our younger generation to consume.
