Coping With Death

Bachelor of Visual Arts Painting Human Centred Design Illustration Identity Narrative Story

Exploring my process of death and rebirth through watercolour.

My work has developed as a form of coping mechanism on the cycle of death, rebirth, and life. This idea has stemmed from my own personal dealings with death and the rebirth of a person within close family members, friends, and pets. Multiple recurring themes within my work are the body being a manufactured gem structure. I explore the form of the human body: flesh, soul, and bones, and how that relates to the rebirth of the person and how one changes within cycles of life itself. I do this by drawing inspiration from a manga series created by Haruko Ichikawa, Land of the Lustrous. I take the inspirations such as the bones being something breakable and fragile, the idea of rebirth within the series, and forgiveness and a bond deeper than love. Many texts express various perspectives on death. My work relates to texts that examine the relationship between life and death—whether it be in the moment of death or after—and how it affects one's relationship with both the deceased and oneself.
