Go beyond the pages into the comic gutter.

"Cres", situated in the heart of Newmarket, is a manga retailer that invites customers to unravel the depths of manga. This conceptual juxtaposition between opulence and rugged charm stimulates curiosity, leaving visitors in a perpetual state of intrigue.

The storefront draws inspiration from the intricate layout of manga panels and the inter-panel space, known as the comic gutter. This influence manifests in a multi-layered façade encompassing a striking fusion of bespoke ceramic tiles and resilient oak panels. Deliberately obscured by frosted windows, the store exterior conceals its interior, leaving the public to discern its secrets through shadows and movements.

Upon crossing the threshold, customers are greeted by the presence of traditional Japanese shoji panels, further perpetuating the theme of obstruction. This design choice serves as a segue into the exhibition space. This area is dedicated to showcasing a rotating ensemble of manga series every six weeks, encouraging regular visits from eager enthusiasts.

Beyond the exhibition area, the main retail space seamlessly transforms into a versatile communal zone, offering a flexible platform that doubles as seating, tables, and a stage. This adaptable space is instrumental in fostering a strong community connection, as it hosts monthly events tied to the featured texts.

The motivation behind this initiative stems from the desire to bridge the gap between the audience and the often enigmatic manga artists, driven by the revelation that one of the most acclaimed manga series, Jujutsu Kaisen, was penned by a female author who initially concealed her identity behind a male pseudonym.

"Cres" aspires to not only be a retailer but a conduit for profound cultural exchange and artistic discovery, perpetuating the legacy of manga as an enduring narrative medium.
