Cutting Through Time
Preserving the Art of Chinese Paper-Cutting This publication beautifully depicts household things from my grandmother’s home via complex paper-cut drawings, encapsulating the spirit of our shared memories. The initiative both maintains the profound personal connection between my grandma and me and honours Chinese intangible cultural heritage, particularly the traditional craft of paper-cutting, which is increasingly neglected by younger generations. In the project’s development, I utilized several methodologies, including paper-cutting techniques, innovative illustration design, iterative prototyping, and weekly critiques from colleagues and lecturers. Progress was recorded via frequent blog updates to direct production and maintain an organized workflow. I explored the cultural background of paper-cutting to enhance my designs and strengthen the project’s relationship to Chinese tradition.
