Disappointment in Utopia comprises a two-channel HD colour video, which includes two videos of footage recorded within the Auckland CBD and hand-drawn animated moving images that emphasise loose lines and hyperrealism. The installation features additional components such as a sculpture made from plastic drop sheet.
I attempt to portray disappointment in forms of chaos and irony. Auckland appears to some as economically almost perfect if viewed superficially. Yet, on closer view, we discover social inequality, including homelessness and a large number of people who wish to leave the city to live in the rural areas due to this sense of disappointment, yet are forced to endure life in the city.
Installation components such as the tilted screen and projector evoke distortion and despair. My work suggests that life must continue even if today appears hopeless. Yet tomorrow maybe there is hope.
