Bachelor of Design Retail Experience Interior Design Place-making Community

A community market, restaurant and rooftop bar celebrating Pukekohe

Gather and Grow honours the Pukekohe War Memorial Hall as a gathering place rooted within the community. This project explores the redevelopment of the existing War Memorial Hall into an indoor market that encourages community connections, supports local business and celebrates Pukekohe’s agricultural identity.

Pukekohe is a semi-rural town surrounded by market gardens, currently home to existing Saturday and Sunday markets every weekend; however, these markets are temporary and weather-dependent. This project offers market vendors a permanent market stall available for lease 3 days a week.

The design is guided by the idea of roots by working with and respecting the hall’s original architecture, ensuring the hall’s historic identity is not erased. The site itself is considered the root the market has grown from. In order to keep the site operational after hours, a restaurant and rooftop bar have been designed, offering a place for the community to gather 7 days a week.
