A Digital Exploration of Code-Switching and the Social Nuances Behind it
While code switching is a valuable adaptive skill, it is often misunderstood or reduced to stereotypes, leaving a gap in public awareness of its nuance and cultural weight. The research question asks: How can kinetic typography disseminated across a range of digital communication platforms raise awareness and better express the tone, vocabulary, and para-linguistic qualities of code switching to an audience of Gen Z?
A design-led methodology combines critical discourse analysis, visual experimentation, and iterative prototyping. Contextually, the project draws on Para-linguistics to highlight how language is representative of the social contexts as well as identity. The contribution lies in demonstrating how design can be used as intervention tool through storytelling.
