“Recast” is an exploration of historical fishermen’s wear and classic rural Kiwi dress. I was interested in how the archetypal clothing used for fishing has evolved over time, and how the knowledge of making was shared between countries through the fishing trade.
Drawing on historical European garments made for fishermen, I have combined their elements, shapes and styles with the modern rural clothing that we Kiwis are so fond of. The collection set out to create garments that are functional to work in, hold up in the elements, and can also be worn as casual clothing.
For this project I was very conscious of my own ecological footprint, so I chose to use recycled and reclaimed materials such as retired sails, old wool blankets and drop sheets. The collection also includes knitted pieces made on flatbed knitting machines. The process was hands-on and not without its challenges and setbacks.
These garments also show how different fabrics and textiles interact with the body and its form. Many of the same shapes recur throughout the collection, yet they take on distinct silhouettes when made in different fabrics.
“Recast” reflects an appreciation for the history, knowledge and practicality embedded in working garments. Combining functionality with creativity, each piece is built with durable materials and construction methods, and is better repaired than replaced. The collection celebrates durability, functionality and sustainability, offering pieces made to be worn, worked in and treasured for years to come
