A Photographic Love Letter

Kaipatiki, Eskdale is a publication, map and poster/print series that denotes connection to my local environment. It explores the ties I've had, the impacts others have had, both for better and for worse, and the ongoing, conflicting relationship humanity has with any Kauri-filled environment. It asks the impossible question: how can documentation photography be inviting while being the very thing that invites danger? Furthermore, how can promotion portray protection without resorting to a lecture? The project tries to do good for an underdocumented but appreciated gem of a place. Everyone holds a location as tantamount to this one, but this is about capturing it in my own light. Its existence in the middle of suburbia as a green escape (that isn’t a golf course) is a miracle. The project I’ve strived for are for those who share these times with me, and for those who wish to see those times again. Documenting this ever-changing place honestly, in the only way I know how. Inviting people to both the present Eskdale Reserve and to their own environmental connections.
