This project responds to a question. How can accessible design improve the understanding and support of autism in the community through symbolism and character-based representation?
Autistic experiences are often misunderstood, and behaviours that differ from social expectations can be misread as rudeness or disinterest. Little Ways explores how Communication Design can make autism education more approachable and engaging, offering an alternative to clinical or stereotypical representations. The project is an autism awareness campaign for young adults who want to better understand and support autistic people in their lives. Six animal characters explore different autistic characteristics through symbolism, with each character paired with a short narrative and collectable figurine. These are supported by an accessible book and campaign materials that explore autism, representation, stigma and ways to offer support. By combining education with collectability and visual storytelling, Little Ways aims to challenge assumptions about autism and encourage greater understanding in everyday relationships.
