A Photographic Honouring of the Whenua

This ongoing research project delves into my evolving connection with the land (whenua) as a first-generation immigrant, identifying as tauiwi in Aotearoa New Zealand. Recognizing the imperative need for a decolonizing shift in my mindset, I employ photography to explore the bond between myself and the maunga, Mauao, situated in the Bay of Plenty. This relationship with Mauao has provided me with a comforting familiarity as I've settled and raised my family in New Zealand.

My work focuses on capturing the changes occurring on Mauao, whether resulting from colonial impacts and long-term damage or acts of reparation. Through a blend of photographic documentation and written letters, I chronicle the evolving connection I share with my adopted country. The project serves as a tribute to Mauao for its enduring friendship, while also bearing witness to the restorative efforts on the maunga. These letters and images signify the commencement of a commitment to the care and reverence of Aotearoa New Zealand's whenua. It underscores the importance of reconciling the past while nurturing the future, all while honoring the profound relationship that has grown between myself and the maunga, as well as myself and my adopted homeland.
