Lover's Cell

Bachelor of Design Environmental Storytelling Game Design Retro Dystopia Narrative Play

That one time my level 999 evil stalker ex hunted me down and hid in the prison vents to control me, so now I need to find a way to escape!

“Somewhere deep underground… Where no one can hear you scream…”
Lover’s Cell is a 2.5D narrative-based escape room game set in an underground abandoned prison. You play as a prisoner who receives mysterious lover letters from an unknown secret admirer, uncover their past by completing quests, communicating for information and explore to find out who’s watching you and escape before it’s too late.

Our target audience are young adults and adults who enjoy slow paced escape rooms, narrative-based games and exploration.

The main idea that drove my environment design was my capstone proposal which focused on investigating the reflection of the experience of control through the environmental interactions within a 2.5D escape room game. I achieved this by designing simulated spaces within the prison, adding obstacle courses, and item collection. Control was a major theme which influenced the overall design. It influenced the narrative's direction, the immersion, the interactions and restrictions within the prison environment.

This game was developed in Unity 3D alongside Catherine Wu. I was the 3D environment artist, a sound designer, a voice actor and did the coding for the environmental interactions. I mainly used Maya, Substance Painter, and Unity 3D for the development of this project.
