Mageru, a homage to Junji Ito
The comic gutter, a place to pause and immerse yourself within your own thoughts. My retail design is a curved comic gutter space to immerse yourself within the haunting stories of the mangaka, Junji Ito. A homage to the mangaka in the form of a gallery space.
A nod to the circular geometry seen within Junji Ito's manga, I’ve created a series of arcs that form curves that meet panels/lines for an intimate space to engage with their precious books as well as opening the space for absorbing the stories. Each zone is dedicated to one of Junji Ito’s famous Manga; Gyo, Uzumaki, Tomie and the short story The Enigma of Amigara Fault - each zone taking on an aspect of the story to create an engrossing experience. The customers are welcome to then head toward the Point of Sale where they can purchase one of the manga on display, however these pieces are untouched, protected and special to the customer - an experience to appreciate Junji Ito’s work. Feelings of compression, distortion and whirlpools are indirectly seen and felt within the space without overshadowing his manga, but still complimenting their work.
