How to re-imagine the intangible cultural heritage of Chuma Xian through visual narrative to revitalize it for the younger generation?
This project explores how visual storytelling and publication design can bridge the gap between the younger generation and the disappearing Chuma Xian culture. The goal is to reinterpret the Chinese mithology through modern artistic expression, raising awareness and sparking interest in this tradition among young people. The work is an illustrated storybook focusing on the four core Chuma Xian deities: the Fox Fairy, Weasel Fairy, Hedgehog Fairy, and Snake Fairy, narrcled through personal perspective of “me” as the protagonist. The project combines detailed accounts of the symbolic meanings and stories of each deity with creative visual representation. It not only preserves the Chuma Xian culture but revitalizes it, showing how visual mediums can deliver historical narratives to modern audiences. By bringing these mythological figures to life, the project emphasises the importance of safeguarding intangible cultural heritage and offers a new perspective for young people to reconnect with traditional culture.
