Mind The Gap

Bachelor of Design Retail Experience Interior Design Spatial Narrative Place-making Story-telling Materiality

A small artist comic, manga, and graphic novel retail store

MIND THE GAP is a small-run and artist made comic, manga, and graphic novel store located on Nuffield Street, Newmarket. It bridges site history and context with the composition of graphic novels. Exploring the notions of transportation and comic layouts, a sense of tension is created between train track lines holding up a train and ‘comic gutters’ (the lines in between comic panels). Translating it into space, Mind The Gap is an orchestration of the effects of line weights created by sunlight, material and bespoke furniture.

A train seat is an imitation of site history - as Newmarket was a place of transporting goods. The industrial feel to the space takes inspiration from old railway stations: the use of brick, concrete, and presentation of exposed pipes.

Mind the Gap is an appreciation for small artists. Comics are an art form: a way of expression. Within the space is a printmaking studio open to the public, where a more interactive space is a way to bring together communities to  make something of their own.
