Processes of Molding Connections in an intimate space

My project, “Molding Connections” operates as both a retail and workshop candle store, located at Nuffield Street, New Market. I designed this to explore different processes of molding connections through scent and shared experiences. The surrounding environment is a high transit area, busy with significant traffic congestion and limited parking spaces. Because of this, the space will only open in the evenings, designed to be intimate and personal, while avoiding busy periods.

I discovered the association of scent and memory, and how this can be used to mold and reinforce connections between visitors. This expresses Manaakitanga through the act of making, caring, and building positive relationships. I carefully considered the life cycle of a candle through experimentation with materials, forms, and lighting. The process of lighting and burning, and the colours of the flame are shown through the interior space. With the retail candle display shaping the flame through negative space, and artificial lighting shaping the smoke, this seals the life cycle of a candle through the interior.

This shows the different processes of molding connections, through the life cycle of a candle in an interior architectural form, scent memory association, and work on negative space, creating an intimate atmosphere.
