“More Than Magic” is a short 2D animated film centred around a young girl named Luna and her adoptive witch mother, Myradia. Luna attempts to earn the love of Myradia by helping her around the house. Eventually they come to a place of mutual understanding. Our short film is set in a whimsical, magical and fantastical world that explores themes of love, belonging and emotional growth.
My research question asked, “How can spatial depth in 2D animation be utilised to create an immersive visual narrative that strengthens audience emotional engagement?” To explore this, I focused on the relationship between dynamic character animation and special effects in shaping spatial depth. These methods directly informed my role as a character and special effects animator for our project.
