Auckland’s fungi are largely overlooked despite a notable level of biodiversity throughout the city.  Fungi play an essential role in forest ecosystems and offer distinctive visual forms and processes. Mycovision responds to concerns about disconnection from nature and declining engagement with local media among Gen Z Aucklanders by investigating how physical publishing can create opportunities for place-based learning and attention. Through a magazine centred on Auckland fungi, Mycovision explores how experimental analogue design methods such as risograph printing, informed by fungal visuals and phenomena, can shape communication outcomes. The project aims to contribute to discussions around nature-connected and media-informed design by examining whether locally grounded visual systems and physical media can encourage curiosity about local environments while demonstrating how analogue experimentation can generate design assets that emerge from the characteristics of a specific place and are distinct from an oversaturated environment of digital media.
