Surfing on the internet

On-the-net conveys my inner thoughts, early online experiences, and feelings on the internet and its ever-changing landscape. My own anxieties and incompetence with technology and the internet as it continues to evolve are expressed and amplified. My project presents two different iterations of the internet and digital landscape of 2000s and of the 2020s and how much has changed in the span of two decades. I reflect on my childhood in the 2000s, and the common sentiment about the World Wide Web and its new-found capabilities and potential. Comparing this to today's internet and social media, the prevalent corporatisation and commercialisation of the internet has made significant changes in the way user engagement is being weaponised.

Today's internet landscape is bleak, it's clear that the main priority of these corporations is to no longer to serve or benefit the people but to serve their wallets. The artworks shift between both iterations of the internet and the potential of what the future of the internet landscape can become. Its current state isn’t permanent. The project suggests that technology isn’t good or bad, it’s neutral. We decide what it gets to be. We must push for a better alternative.
