Voting in Aotearoa is currently a manual process, requiring tens of thousands of election workers to count the votes every General Election. This manual process leads to human error, highlighted by cases of dual votes being included in the official count in 2023.

As a speculative project, OneVote explores what a digital replacement to New Zealand’s voting system could look like. It is designed to be simple, with three tactile buttons that make navigating the interface easy and give voters confidence when making their selections. Designed to work entirely offline, OneVote has security at its very core. Its simplicity allows for accessibility, with braille buttons and a screen reader allowing low-vision voters to cast their ballot without a support person.
