A Speculative Technology That Allows Users to Augment Their Senses While They Eat

Inspired by my own challenges with food constraints in social settings and influenced by critical theories like technological determinism, Palate speculatively reimagines commensality in a technologically mediated future. It responds to the rise of personalised diets and food constraints, framing itself as a socially constructed technology that emphasises inclusivity and connection between people, food, and technology.

Featuring a nano-material mouth patch and an accompanying app, Palate gamifies commensality, making it interactive on a sensory level. When placed on the tongue before eating, the mouth patch allows users to share meals with friends while enhancing their sensory experiences through the Palate app. Users can revisit memories, create new sensory experiences, or try something adventurous—all within their minds - making eating together enjoyable and accessible for everyone.
