The words for the World

This practice-led capstone project explores strategies for facilitating communication between international and local students regarding cultural exchange. Diversity and the interchange of cultures have been extensively examined and acknowledged for their potential to enhance personal and professional development. Nevertheless, in numerous research studies, domestic students may not perceive their interactions with international students from diverse cultural backgrounds as chances for cultural exchange, leading to the missed advantages of experiential learning. To address this issue, I have developed a card game named ‘Polyverse Crossroad’ as the focal point of my project. This game incorporates idiomatic expressions from various countries as cultural elements. The primary objective of the card game is to pique interest by highlighting differences in the literal translation and meanings of idiomatic expressions in each player’s native language. In doing so, it provides an indirect means for players to engage with and gain insights into the cultural backgrounds of others. I blend handprints and digital collages to depict various cultures. This collage technique draws inspiration from Eric Karl’s collage illustrations and the papercut artworks of Henri Matisse. Within my project, the collage serves as a symbolic representation of multiculturalism. A whimsical and playful illustrative style, reminiscent of a child’s point of view, has been adopted to capture the inclusivity and openness required for interacting with people from various backgrounds. This project contributes towards acknowledging the individuals within our society as representatives of diversity and stands as a reminder of the importance of engaging with people from various backgrounds.
