Project Yokai is a set of game-ready assets I have created based on the mythology I grew up with in rural Japan. The two characters depicted are a shi-shi, a protective festival lion who wards off evil spirits, and a kappa, a scrawny turtle creature who acts mischievously.
Through learning shape language, I tried to emphasize the personality of these characters by building them off primary shapes and flowing that within their anatomy. The shi-shi hosts square, rigid figure whilst the kappa displays a more triangular, sleek design.
The majority of the characters and background assets were created from sculpting, re-topology, UV unwrapping, hand-drawn texturing and rigging. Combining these steps assists in creating detailed but low-poly characters and creations that can hold a unique and memorable design.
