Exploring the Unknowns
This research project addresses how travelogues can create a sense of cultural connection through a fictional narrative of a place the researcher has not visited. The study explores the problem of how to engage with cultural identity and belonging through editorial design in contexts where direct experience is absent. The research question guiding this project is: How can a travelogue create a sense of cultural connection through the fictional narrative of a place I have not visited? The project situated itself within the fields of cultural identity, and travelogue, with a particular focus on the of Isan, Northeast Thailand.
The methodology is practice-led, incorporating autoethnography to reflect on the design process of the researcher, combined with a structured editorial design pipeline that includes research, prototyping, and critical feedback. This approach allows for iterative exploration and refinement of design decisions. The significance of the project lies in its contribution to understanding how fictional narratives can foster connections and encourage meaningful communication and understanding of cultural diversity.
