Roasted is a comic cafe designed for, and dedicated to, a community of comic book enthusiasts and coffee lovers. Situated at 41/37 Nuffield Street, just off Broadway in Newmarket, Auckland, Roasted was carefully crafted into a heavily texture-influenced space that captivates from afar and mesmerises up close, made to draw in and hold the attention of passersby. Each and every surface within the design is in some way influenced by a comic construction method or common features associated with comic books to shape a unique facade and retail interior space. The extravagant exterior wall and perforated awning pulls you in to easily follow along a recessed wall of large windows that flow directly into the store. The interior is designed so the customer moving through the space is a moving story with the surrounding surfaces providing the background movement as sourced from comics and graphic novels. The open plan and large windows allow for natural light to enter the space as much as possible, lighting up the southern-facing store. Aiming to be a warm, comfortable and inviting space, Roasted is fabricated using natural materials, soft fabrics, deep colours and tones, and stimulating textures. Roasted is designed as a dual retail and hospitality space to form an interactive environment for customers to enjoy in solitude or with others, spending more time in-store.
