Spectator's Reverie: A Visual Overture

Bachelor of Visual Arts Painting Identity Narrative Queer Art

Storytelling, a fundamental aspect of the human experience, weaves through my art, "Spectator’s Reverie: A Visual Overture," where I explore the intricate narrative of prejudice as a person of color in a Western society observed through a Eurocentric lens. This body of work features self-portraits in hyper-accentuated costumes within a theatrical setting, depicting the pressures of performance to navigate societal biases. Utilizing oil paints, I draw inspiration from the ideologies of spectacles like the circus and pantomime to symbolize the expectation for extravagance, reflecting the constant pressure to excel and conform in a Eurocentric landscape.

"Spectator’s Reverie" aims to elicit sympathy and empathy by portraying performances tinged with misery, challenging idealized perceptions of the queer person of colour experience. This intentional portrayal invites the audience to confront the complexities of identity, fostering a deeper understanding of the challenges faced at the intersection of queerness and racial identity within the Eurocentric societal framework.
