Screen-free communication device for kids

With concerns about online safety, cyber-bullying and prolonged screen-time, many parents want to resist giving children a smartphone. However, families still want to stay connected while apart. Squawky Talky is a screen-free mobile device that allows children to send and receive voice messages to a parent’s mobile phone.

This project was inspired by the lifestyle of working parents who struggle to maintain a healthy bond with their children due to long periods of time away from their families. With Squawky Talky, children can communicate with up to three contacts or group chats, while contacts can receive, play and record voice messages via the Squawky mobile app. The app features practical qualities such as GPS tracking to keep children safe, but also features more meaningful qualities such as “personal podcasts” which capture precious memories by auto-collating snippets of weekly voice messages for families to play, save and cherish forever.

By creating a simple, playful and accessible mode of communication, Squawky Talky facilitates more regular and meaningful interactions between children and caregivers, fostering stronger relationships for families to thrive.
