Take Me to the Milky Way started with a proposition:
What if humans moved to space and lived alongside aliens?
Against the backdrop of outer space, Take Me to the Milky Way explores experimental fashion through the imagined future reality of aliens and humans. This alternate reality provided an opportunity for me to explore fashion through an unconventional lens, instilling a sense of imagination and childlike curiosity throughout my work.
Inspired by an astronaut’s spacesuit and an alien’s flesh, the collection centres on the methodology of covering the skin and transforming the body’s shape, allowing the wearer to exist within my imagined ‘outer space’. Gathered and quilted elements draw on an astronaut’s spacesuit, modifying form while allowing movement. Alien features are explored through bubbly knit textures and the bright colour palette. These ideas are grounded through sportswear elements such as striped rib trims, hoods and visible drawstrings.
A textiles-first approach was used throughout my design process, influencing fabric choice, colour and silhouette. Volume and shape were created through gathered channels rather than traditional patternmaking. This method further instilled the curiosity behind my work, encouraging me to view garments as explorations of form rather than archetypes.
Take Me to the Milky Way explores ideas of what could be, looking beyond mainstream fashion on Earth towards a more creative, personal and expressive future.
