Where Colour Becomes a Language of Identity

This project is a deeply personal exploration and celebration of my cultural identity as a Coloured South African. Through the garments I create, I aim to honour the rich history, resilience, and vibrancy of my community, not only by highlighting the challenges we face, such as the lingering effects of apartheid, gang violence, and political corruption, but also by celebrating the joy, passion, and cultural pride that define us. My design practice is rooted in reclaiming narratives, preserving heritage, and creating space for self-representation. I’m inspired by our unique way of speaking, moving, dressing, and connecting through music and everyday expressions of culture that deserve visibility. This collection uses movement and colour to reflect our spirit and to spark meaningful conversations, not just within South Africa and Aotearoa but also across the world. Ultimately, this work is a tribute to where I come from, what we carry, and what we choose to remember.
