Interpreting the apocalypse through religious lens

To confront the discomfort I personally have towards religions, my art practice explores my interpretation of mortality in the context of the apocalypse, through my intertwined religious experience of growing up in a Christian and an Islamic household, and my mixed heritage of being Fijian Indian. Through the depictions of symbolic iconography derived from The Book of Revelation and The Qur’an, and the influence of a post-apocalyptic animated series, Adventure Time, which altered how I would interpret these religious scenes, I create eerily empty landscapes that have no sense of time or place. As well as interweaving geometrical patterns in and around my paintings, taking elements from the traditional Fijian bark cloth known as Masi Kesa and harmonious Islamic designs that explore multiutility and unity, symbolising my family’s Fiji-Indian common heritage amidst their different faiths.
