I have always wondered why different films, artists, and games each have a unique art style, and how that art style complements the overall narrative of each piece.
This project was my capstone exploration of how the art style of a low-poly 3D animation, combined with 2D animated elements such as smear frames, impact frames, and comic-style text, could strengthen and visually support a narrative. Through the project, I explored how the low-poly aesthetic could be pushed beyond its typical use to better complement storytelling. The findings from this research informed the visual direction of the animated project, although character design was not a focus.
To achieve this, I used Blender to create a hybrid animation workflow that combined low-poly 3D characters and environments with 2D animated elements using the Grease Pencil tool. Throughout the project, I documented my design process and creative decision-making to better understand how art style can contribute to visual storytelling.
